PROFESSIONAL ORIENTATION

Although my background training and education have prepared me for equal enthusiasm in zoological, botanical and geological studies, my endeavors into palynological studies have rewardingly combined two disciplines. A multidisciplinary approach is key towards an understanding of recent and paleoecosystems. The question of "what" has and will continue to be examined through taxonomic studies. A sound nomenclatural and taxonomic system will form the basis for research into the "why" and "how." It is the "why" and "how" which stir my imagination in answering such questions as "Why were the angiosperms successful in dominating the plant kingdom during the close of the Cretaceous and dawn of the Tertiary?" "How did the present distribution of plants come to be?" I have been fortunate during my career to make and maintain valuable contacts with colleagues in academic, government and private research organisations, who have provided me with information and assistance which would be otherwise lacking. I fully enjoy, and hope to continue active research and learning activities which require imagination and sound scientific knowledge and practice.

PERSONAL INTERESTS

My foremost interest centers around the welfare and happiness of my wife and friend Susan. Photography, music and reading play an important part of the activities that I enjoy. Weekend field trips provide an appreciation of our natural world, while at the same time develop my photographic skills. Several of my photographs have been used by private and government agencies for display or publication. Music has nearly always been present in my life, for I believe as Beethoven did, that "music should strike fire in the hearts of men, and bring tears to the eyes of women."
