Florida Museum to celebrate Earth Day with special activities

GAINESVILLE, Fla. --- The Florida Museum of Natural History will celebrate Earth Day from 12-3 p.m. on Saturday, April 22 with several special activities, including donating $1 from every Butterfly Rainforest adult admission to the Lubee Bat Conservancy.

Activities from 12 - 3 p.m. include "Mask Making" and "Curiosity Corner," which includes information on Florida manatees and sea turtles. From 12-1 p.m. the City of Gainesville's Nature Operation Division will present "Some Like it Hot!: Discover How Fire is Used to Maintain Florida's Ecosystems" and from 1-3 p.m., natural fiber artist Nancy Gildersleeve will demonstrate palm weaving. At 2 p.m. the Butterfly Rainforest will hold a butterfly release inside the vivarium. (paid admission required)

The Lubee Bat Conservancy is an international non-profit organization working with others to save fruit and nectar bats and their habitats through conservation, research and education.

The Earth Day celebration is being held in cooperation with the Samuel P. Harn Museum of Art.

The Florida Museum of Natural History is Florida's state natural history museum, dedicated to understanding, preserving and interpreting biological diversity and cultural heritage. It is located near the intersection of Southwest 34th Street and Hull Road in the University of Florida Cultural Plaza in Gainesville. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday-Saturday and 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday. The Florida Museum is closed on Thanksgiving and Christmas Day. Butterfly Rainforest admission is $7.50 for adults and $4.50 for children ages 3-12.
