Register now for Oct. 14-15 inaugural Fla. Butterfly Festival

GAINESVILLE, Fla. --- Registration is now open for the 2006 Florida Butterfly Festival to be held Oct. 14-15 in Gainesville at the Florida Museum of Natural History. While registration is not required, those who sign up for the $25 Festival Package before Oct. 6 will receive a 10 percent discount on all registered, fee-based activities, which are space-limited. The festival also includes free activities with no registration required.

The inaugural Florida Butterfly Festival will be held at the University of Florida Cultural Plaza and other area locations, including Kanapaha Botanical Gardens, Morningside Nature Center, Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park and Santa Fe Community College Teaching Zoo. The Florida Museum is planning the festival with several community partners, including the Arts Association of Alachua County, Alachua County Visitors and Convention Bureau, City of Gainesville Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs, Curtis M. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts and the Samuel P. Harn Museum of Art.

The festival features lectures, field trips, workshops, family activities and other events. Festival visitors also may tour the Florida Museum's Butterfly Rainforest exhibit and the new Florida Wildflower and Butterfly Garden, which will be dedicated Oct. 14 during the festival.

The Florida Museum of Natural History is Florida's state natural history museum, dedicated to understanding, preserving and interpreting biological diversity and cultural heritage. It is located near the intersection of Southwest 34th Street and Hull Road in the University of Florida Cultural Plaza in Gainesville. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday-Saturday and 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday. Butterfly Rainforest admission is $8.50 for adults ($7.50 Fla. residents) and $4.50 for children ages 3-12.
