Fla. Museum to host 'Living Exhibit' talk with historian Jon Sensbach Aug. 2

GAINESVILLE, Fla. --- Join the Florida Museum of Natural History at 2 p.m. Aug. 2 as University of Florida history professor Jon Sensbach brings African culture in the antebellum South to life.

The "Living Exhibit" talk, entitled "Africa in America," will take place in the final section of the museum's newest traveling exhibit, "Inside Africa." Sensbach will discuss what life was like in the aftermath of the African slave trade to America, and the identities people crafted as they transitioned from traditional African culture to life in America.

Sensbach is author of two books, "A Separate Canaan: The Making of an Afro-Moravian World in North Carolina, 1763-1840" and "Rebecca's Revival: Creating Black Christianity in the Atlantic World." He is currently working on a study of religious awakenings in the early South and Atlantic world.

Based on a permanent exhibit at the Field Museum of Chicago, "Inside Africa" engages visitors through many hands-on activities, three-dimensional settings, multimedia presentations and an exceptional collection of artifacts. he exhibit, which is on display through Sept. 7, offers a deeper understanding of the vitality, richness and significance of Africa's many cultures from historical and contemporary perspectives. Regular admission prices will apply for the "Living Exhibit" talk.

Admission to "Inside Africa" is $6.50 for adults, $5.50 for Florida residents, seniors age 62 and above and students, and $4 for children ages 3-12. For more information, visit www.flmnh.ufl.edu.

The Florida Museum of Natural History is Florida's state natural history museum, dedicated to understanding, preserving and interpreting biological diversity and cultural heritage. It is located near the intersection of Southwest 34th Street and Hull Road in the University of Florida Cultural Plaza in Gainesville.
