Fla. Museum hosts 11th annual "Trashformations" recycled art competition

GAINESVILLE, Fla. --- The Florida Museum of Natural History and the Alachua County Office of Waste Alternatives will present the 11th annual "Trashformations" recycled art competition awards ceremony from 5 to 9 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 20.
The artwork featured is created by local middle school, high school and college students from trash and other recycled materials. Artwork must be comprised of 70 percent or more recycled, recyclable or reused materials. The Florida Museum will display the winning entries in its Central Gallery through Dec. 6.
"It's a fun and creative way to raise awareness about recycling," said Patrick Irby, a waste alternative specialist for the Alachua County Office of Waste Alternatives.
The competition includes three divisions: middle school, high school and college. Award amounts for first, second and third places are $400, $300 and $200 respectively. Winners of two additional awards in each category: the Waste Watcher Award and the Museum Award; each will receive $75.
The application deadline to submit an entry is 5 p.m. Friday (Nov. 6). Artwork must be delivered to the museum between noon and 5 p.m. on Nov. 19.
The awards ceremony and reception Nov. 20 is free and open to the public.

The Florida Museum of Natural History is Florida's state natural history museum, dedicated to understanding, preserving and interpreting biological diversity and cultural heritage.
