GAINESVILLE, Fla. --- Watch milk jugs morph into modern art and gears and gadgets become giant bugs at the 12th annual Trashformations award ceremony at the Florida Museum of Natural History from 5:30 to 8 p.m., Nov. 19.

Alachua County middle school, high school and college students may participate in this recycled art competition. The registration deadline is 5 p.m. Saturday, by e-mail, fax or mail.

"We are excited to host Trashformations again this year," said Rachel Greiner, education assistant at the Florida Museum of Natural History. "This is a wonderful event that really showcases students' creativity while raising awareness about the importance of recycling."

Trashformations is sponsored by the Alachua County Board of County Commissioners, the Office of Waste Alternatives and the Florida Museum of Natural History.

All entries must be made from at least 70 percent recycled, recyclable or reusable materials.

Lisa Stevens, education secretary at the Samuel P. Harn Museum of Art, Michael Amish, manager and co-founder of Indigo Green Building Solutions, and Jeff Huber, Florida Museum of Natural History artisan, will serve as judges this year. First, second and third place awards of $400, $300 and $200 respectively, will be presented in each category. Two additional awards of $75 will be given in each category, The Waste Watcher award and The Museum award.

"The Trashformations recycled art competition gives us an opportunity to engage our college, high school and middle school students on ways to creatively reuse discarded materials to design works of art," said Sally Palmi, waste alternatives manager for the Alachua County public works department. "Being part of a juried art competition, cash prizes and the opportunity to have their artwork displayed to the public at the museum offer a great incentive for our students to participate."

The museum will display all entries during the award ceremony and display winning entries until Dec. 5.
