See new exhibit, discuss water sustainability at museum’s Oct. 9 ‘Science Café’

September 26th, 2012

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Learn about water sustainability and the associated challenges and choices related to water quality, quantity and policies at the Florida Museum of Natural History’s next free “Science Café” Oct.9.

The event will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the museum, 3215 Hull Road on the University of Florida campus. As an introduction to the café program, visitors will be able to view the new exhibit “Water: Discovering and Sharing Solutions from 6 to 7 p.m.

The guest presenters for “Water Sustainability: Public Challenges, Private Choices” are Pierce Jones, professor and director of the UF program for resource efficient communities; Joe Delfino, UF environmental engineering sciences professor; and Wendy Graham, the Carl S. Swisher chair in water resources and director of the UF Water Institute. Desserts and a cash bar will be available.

“Florida’s water system is dynamic and complex,” Graham said. “Everything that the public does affects the quantity and quality of water.”

This is the second year of the “Science Café” program in which community members and guest speakers gather at local restaurants or the museum to discuss contemporary science issues over food.

“We really try to offer a variety of topics that may appeal to different interests,” said Betty Dunckel, director of the Florida Museum’s Center for Science Learning. “Water is a very important issue in Florida, as well as across the country. The café provides an opportunity for community members to learn about and engage in discussions about some of the related issues.”

The final “Science Café” of the fall 2012 series will be from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 27 at the Warehouse Restaurant and Lounge, 502 S. Main St. Guest speaker Susan Milbrath, Florida Museum curator of Latin American art and archaeology, will discuss “The Maya Calendar: Cosmology and the End of the World.”

To help plan for the free programs, please RSVP at least one week in advance of the café date with your name and the number attending by emailing aerickson@flmnh.ufl.edu or calling Amanda Harvey, 352-273-2062.
