GAINESVILLE, Fla. --- Engage in lively discussions with University of Florida experts during the Florida Museum of Natural History's spring Science Café series.

The four Cafés are scheduled Jan. 17 and March 20 at Leonardo's 706, 706 W. University Ave., and Feb. 28 and April 17 at the Warehouse Restaurant and Lounge, 502 S. Main St. The events are free, but participants are responsible for purchasing their own food and beverages.

Each Science Café examines a different topic: Microlivestock: Insects as a Sustainable Food; Designer Genes: Genetic Engineering from Plants to People; Words from the Earth: Uncovering Our First Colony through Archaeology; and Giant Reptiles and Shrinking Mammals: How Climate Change Affects Life on Earth, respectively.

"We tried to pick topics of public interest that will stimulate diverse questions and thought-provoking discussions," said Betty Dunckel, director of the Florida Museum's Center for Informal Science Education.

Each Café includes a short presentation and is designed to allow members of the community to ask questions and engage in lively discussions with each other and guest speakers.

Those planning to attend a Science Café are asked to RSVP at least one week in advance by emailing skelly@flmnh.ufl.edu or calling 352-273-2085. Space is limited to the first 80 registrants at Leonardo's 706 and 185 people at The Warehouse Restaurant and Lounge. Visit www.flmnh.ufl.edu/education/cise/science_cafe.htm for more information, including scheduled speakers for each program.

The museum hosted its first Science Café Oct. 6, 2011. About 125 people attended the event including college students, young professionals and retirees.
