Fla. Museum to show award-winning ‘Gimme Green,’ host filmmaker Thursday during Museum Nights

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The awards shows may be over, but audiences still have an opportunity to see a winner Thursday as the Florida Museum of Natural History presents “Gimme Green,” a film produced by University of Florida Documentary Institute graduates Isaac Brown and Eric Flagg.

Flagg will introduce the documentary and lead discussions after both showings of the film at 6 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. during Museum Nights.

“Gimme Green,” winner of numerous awards including best documentary at the Phoenix Film Festival, the Oxford International Film Festival and Beverly Hills Shorts Festival, takes a humorous look at the American obsession with the residential lawn and its effect on the environment.

Learn about ‘Science of Love’ at Fla. Museum this Valentine’s Day

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The Florida Museum of Natural History will host “The Science of Love,” an evening filled with delectable desserts and good humor, from 5-9 p.m. Feb. 14 as part of the “Museum Nights” program.

Learn about the animal side of dating as psychologist Shauna Springer explains the thought process behind expressions and experiences of love and courtship during “The Psychology of Love” at 7 p.m.

“Museum Nights” are held on select Thursday evenings while the University of Florida is in session at the Florida Museum and Harn Museum of Art, and are sponsored by UF Student Government. Enjoy unique entertainment, food and fun during extended museum hours, 5 – 9 p.m. These events are co-sponsored by UF Student Government.

Enjoy family fun during Fla. Museum ‘Starry Nights’ event April 12

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Witness the heavens through the lens of a telescope and discover the constellations at the Florida Museum of Natural History from 5-10 p.m. April 12 during “Starry Nights: The Birth of Stars and Planets.”

Activities sponsored by the University of Florida Astronomy Department and Alachua Astronomy Club include telescopes for visitors to view planets and stars, planetarium shows, child-friendly activity centers, a scavenger hunt and the puppet show “Red Star, Blue Star, How I Wonder What You Are.”

At 6 p.m., Stephen Kane of the UF Astronomy Department will present a family-oriented lecture, “Wanders in the Celestial Space & Beyond.” At 7 p.m. Charles Lada of Harvard University and the Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics will present the featured guest lecture, “The Search for Stellar Origins from Antiquity to the 21st Century.”

Dig for treasure during Museum Nights at the Fla. Museum March 22

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Enjoy an evening digging for treasure, participating in demonstrations of geological phenomena and watching gem cutting demonstrations with the University of Florida Department of Geological Sciences and Gainesville Gem and Mineral Society from 5-10 p.m. March 22 during Museum Nights at the Florida Museum of Natural History. “Can You Dig It?” will provide a fun-filled exploration of rocks, gems, fossils and Earth for all ages.

“Museum Nights” are sponsored by UF Student Government and held most Thursday evenings while UF is in session at the Florida Museum and Samuel P. Harn Museum of Art.

Florida Museum presents ‘Candle Light Jazz Night’ Feb.15

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The Florida Museum of Natural History is offering an evening of smooth jazz from 5-10 p.m. Feb.15 during “Candle Light Jazz Night” with local guitarist Sarah Tobing.

The evening is part of “Museum Nights,” held most Thursday evenings while the University of Florida is in session at the Florida Museum and Harn Museum of Art, and sponsored by UF Student Government.

Other Florida Museum special events planned for “Museum Nights” this spring include “Science Movie Night: Tibet: A Buddhist Trilogy,” which complements the Florida Museum’s temporary exhibit “Tibet: Mountains and Valleys, Castles and Tents.” Lama David Bole will lead a discussion during this two-night film screening. Admission to the Tibet exhibit is free to the public on these evenings. Parts one and three of the trilogy begin at 6:30 p.m. on March 1, and part two begins at 6:30 p.m. on March 8.

From 5-10 p.m. on March 22, the Florida Museum will present “Can You Dig It?” with the UF Geology Department and Gainesville Gem and Mineral Society. Visitors may enjoy an evening digging for treasure, participating in demonstrations of geological phenomena and watching gem cutting demonstrations.

Florida Museum presents ‘Revealing the Deep’ lecture March 30 by Daniel Fornari

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Explore the new science behind mysterious black smokers–deep-sea hot water vents–and exotic tubeworms as Daniel J. Fornari, director of the Deep Ocean Exploration Institute, discusses 21st-century ocean science and technology at 6 p.m. March 30. Fornari’s lecture, “Revealing the Deep: the 21st Century Revolution in Ocean Science and Technology,” will be held at the Florida Museum of Natural History as part of its Museum Nights program.

Fornari holds the W. Van Allen Clark Senior Scientist Chair at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. He is internationally recognized for his research in the Pacific, Atlantic and Indian oceans on volcanic and hydrothermal processes and on the structure and magmatic processes at oceanic transforms and islands, such as Hawaii and the Galapagos. In 2000, he co-developed “Dive and Discover,” an education and outreach Web site for school science enrichment.

After Fornari’s presentation, Florida Museum of Natural History Molecular Lab Curator Pam Soltis will dissect myth from reality in “The Relic” beginning at 8 p.m. The discussion will be followed by a public screening of the R-rated horror film “The Relic.”

Funded by UF Student Government, Museum Nights strives to increase student and community visitation at the UF Cultural Plaza, located near the intersection of Southwest 34th Street and Hull Road. It serves as an entertainment alternative for Thursday nights in Gainesville and offers individuals who are too busy during the day the opportunity to visit the museums in the evening. Fla. Museum to host ‘Bats & Butterflies: A Celebration of Pollinators’ during Museum Nights April 6

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The Florida Museum of Natural History invites University of Florida students to visit its award-winning Butterfly Rainforest, search for night-flying moths and learn about Florida pollinators, such as bats and butterflies at its “Bats & Butterflies: A Celebration of Pollinators” April 6. Admission to the Butterfly Rainforest is free to UF students with their Gator 1 identification card from 5-7:30 p.m. The event is co-sponsored by the Lubee Bat Conservancy.

Fla. Museum to host movie, lecture during Museum Nights Oct. 13 Movie night features ’20,000 Leagues Under the Sea,’ talk from Smithsonian scientist

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The Florida Museum of Natural History will offer its first “Science Movie Night” beginning at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 13. The free evening will begin with a lecture by the Smithsonian Institution’s David Pawson titled “Life in the Deep Ocean: What Do We Need to Know and How Much Do We Need to Know?” followed by a showing of the G-rated movie “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea” beginning at 7 p.m.

The new science movie night program is being held during Museum Nights, a collaboration between University of Florida Student Government, the Florida Museum of Natural History and the Samuel P. Harn Museum of Art in which both museums are open from 5-10 p.m. on Thursday evenings.

The Florida Museum also will host another science movie night during Museum Nights on Nov. 3 with the showing of “Slugs,” an R-rated horror movie that “Slug Fancy” magazine chose as “the greatest movie of all time.”

Funded by UF Student Government, Museum Nights strives to increase student and community visitation at the UF Cultural Plaza, located near the intersection of Southwest 34th Street and Hull Road.
