Grossology Teacher Training Photos
The Grossology Teacher training held October 4, 2008 at the Florida Museum of Natural History provided teachers with guest speakers, a Grossology exhibit tour, book reviews, information and activities related to human biology and health and some gross fun!
Teachers become the students as members of the FLMNH Education staff lead them through lesson plans that can be applied in the classroom.
Easy, affordable, and effective - three common factors for all the demonstrated educational activities at the workshop.
The average person swallows a quart of snot each day. Teachers learned this "gross" fact at Station 1 and made mucus too.
Teachers learned about the respiratory system at Station 2 and built a model lung to demonstrate how the diaphragm helps us to breathe.
"It really works!" Plastic bottles, balloons, baggies and rubber bands are all you need to make a pair of working lungs.
Station 3 had teachers identifying animal feces and discussing how and why they look different.
Do these feces belong to a turkey or a porcupine?
Who knew sorting animal feces could be so much fun?
What happens when you mix baking soda and vinegar? Station 4 explained the what, how and why of a simple chemical reaction.
An easy experiment with a big impact.
Teachers discussed the digestion process at Station 5 by chewing crackers and spitting them into a cup.
Iodine indicates if starch is broken down into sugar by an enzyme present in saliva.
Workshop evaluations ensure the Florida Museum will make future workshops even better.
