[Commentary ann.:] Hillary Cherry investigated the origin of this collection in December 2002 to determine whether the specimen is from an adventive or planted tree. Hillary's conclusion--'Sounds like it is probably a specimen that is persisting from cultivation, which leaves Lee county out of Ochrosia's "naturalized" range for now.' This conclusion is based on correspondence with the collector, Dr. William Marquardt, and Dick Workman, a botanist and ecological consultant in the Fort Myers area. Dick Workman knows the plants of the site where this specimen is from, the Pineland Archaeological site. Mr. Workman states via email on 10 Dec 2002: "The Ochrosia is still there. It produces fruit but I've noticed no seed germination. It fits with the other ornamental plants from other continents that are planted there. I expect the Ochrosia was planted in the 1950's but that's just a guess. Callitris glaucophylla, Melaleuca quinquenervia, and Casuarina equisetafolia were also planted. I'll look at it more closely and document any seed germination." Copies of this email correspondence are filed in the FLAS correspondence files under "William Marquardt." --Kent Perkins, 13 Dec. 2002
