At present, the GRR serves as a repository for 5,693 specimens received from the Mammal, Bird, Invertebrate Zoology andIchthyology collections and, the Maxillariinae Phylogeny Project and Phylogeny and character evolution in the Blakeeae (Melastomataceae) of the Herbarium. All the samples deposited in the GRR are associated with a specimen catalogued in the corresponding FLMNH range.
The variety of tissue types deposited in our collection reflect the diverse taxonomic focus of research at the FLMNH. Specimens deposited in the GRR by the Mammal and Bird ranges are primarily derived from liver, heart and muscle tissues. The specimens deposited by the Ichthyology collection are mostly clips from different fins and, in a few cases, muscle plugs. Not surprisingly, the most diverse tissue types are those from the Invertebrate Zoology specimens, which vary widely depending on the source organism. The orchid collection has tissues from flowers and leaves as well as a significant amount of DNA extractions.
We are currently adding more materials from these ranges and have begun the work of incorporating the Invertebrate Zoology collections' genetic samples.
