This background is adapted from a photograph of cutmarks on the tusk of a mastodon hunted by Paleoindians 12,200 years ago.
The Aucilla River Prehistory Project is an archaeological/paleontological project excavating a particularly rich series of deposits that yield ancient megafaunal remains in association with Paleoindian artifacts. Most of the excavations occur below water in the Aucilla River.
