Butterfly WINGS
Website Privacy Policy in compliance with the Children’s Online Privacy
Protection (COPPA)
Q1.
What types of information do we collect about the 4-H agents and volunteer
leaders?
In order for 4-H youth to participate in Project Butterfly WINGS, we
require the 4-H agent or volunteer leader to register with their first
and last name, address, city, state, zip code, county, phone number,
e-mail address and 4-H group name. They create their own username and
password. The 4-H agent or volunteer leader then registers each youth
with first name, username and password. Youth may change their password
when they first log on to the site.
When youth create a password on Project Butterfly WINGS, we do not collect
any information that would allow us or anyone else to identify the youth.
When prompted to create a password, we recommend that it be a non-personally
identifiable name.
Q2.
What types of information do we collect about the participating youth?
We require the 4-H agent or leader to register participating youth by
listing first name, username and password. Youth may change their password
when the youth first log on to the site.
To participate, the youth are instructed to enter data, including their
4-H club name; butterfly observation site description including county,
city and state; and lists of butterflies seen.
Youth may also participate in the Wings gallery by submitting photographs,
drawings, and/or poems with their butterfly observation experiences.
Selections from these submissions are then posted for a limited period
of time. Posting questions or observations on the message board is an
additional way that they might participate.
If you submit pictures, questions, comments or anything else to us which
is posted on our site, you will be identified on our site no more than
by first name, age, county, city and state.
Youth may contact us with questions and a response is returned to the
email address from which the question came.
Q3. How do we use and share the personally identifiable
information that we have collected?
We do not share any information about a participant with any third parties.
Information entered regarding county, state and species observed is
displayed through maps, tables and charts available under “Results.”
This information is displayed for participants, scientists and interested
viewers to observe trends and dates when and where butterflies are found.
The Project Butterfly WINGS team may monitor web activity by the 4-H
participant.
Q4. Who is Project Butterfly WINGS?
Project Butterfly WINGS is a collaborative project funded in part by
the National Science Foundation (ESI-0406173). It was developed by the
University of Florida’s Florida Museum of Natural History and Department
of Wildlife Ecology and Conservation, in cooperation with 4-H, Florida
Cooperative Extension Service.
Q5. How do we notify and obtain consent from parents
for the collection of information from their youth?
It is the responsibility of the 4-H leader or agent registering the
youth participant to insure that written permission is in the form of
a consensual signature of the parent or legal guardian.
Q6. How can parents access, change or delete information
about their youth?
1. A parent can contact the 4-H agent or leader to access, change, or
delete the personal information. The parent will need to have the youth’s
username and password.
2. A parent can contact Project Butterfly WINGS to access, change or
delete the information that we have collected from his or her youth
by sending an e-mail to WINGS@flmnh.ufl.edu. Please include the youth’s
name and the parent’s e-mail address in the e-mail so that we can better
assist you with your inquiry or request.
Q7. How will we notify parents if our Youth Privacy Policy
changes?
Notification of Changes
If we change our privacy policy, we will post those changes on our Web
Site so you will always be aware of what information we collect, how
we use it and under what circumstances we disclose it. We will apply
material changes in our Privacy Policy only in conformance with applicable
law, including any applicable provisions of COPPA that require parental
consent.
