A FIRSTHAND OBSERVATION OF A SPINY DOGFISH GIVING BIRTH IN THE WILD

2 August 2002
Rockport, MA. Bob Cornelli, witnessed the birthing even while scuba diving. He kindly shares his observations with us.

"On 21 August 2002, I witnessed and photographed a dogfish giving birth. This event occurred at Halfway Rock outside of Rockport, Massachusetts. This event was an amazing sight. When I first saw the dogfish, I thought she was dead. Laying upside down on a shelf at about 50' in depth, she was not moving. She started to shake and then began to give birth. I saw the complete birth of one pup and watched a second until I ran low on air. After the first pup was born, it layed at the mother's tail for awhile, then swam over her. After I took a photo of the baby over the mother, the strobe attracted the pup and it came over to the camera."
