A recent research field trip to Panama took place from July 18th to July 22nd. Participants included faculty members, post docs, and graduate and undergraduate students from the University of Florida. The main purpose of the trip was to visit fossil localities along the Panama Canal such as Hodges Hill, Sabanitas quarries and Gatun Third Locks. The team found a fossil of a 12 million year old sea cow in the Gatun Formation.

Other activities included meetings with PCP PIRE partners and institutions in Panama such as SENACYT, University of Panama, Museo de Ciencias Naturales, Museo del Canal Interoceánico and Biomuseo.

Participants included Bruce MacFadden, Doug Jones, David Foster, Austin Hendy, Roger Portell and Jorge Pino. Undergraduate students Jessica Foster and Matthew Drouillard, and junior volunteer, Zachary Jones, visited Panama for the first time. We also were fortunate to have volunteer Charles O’Connor and Cindy Bear from Ft Myers, FL with us in the field.



La más reciente salida de campo a Panamá, tuvo lugar del 18 al 22 de julio. Entre los participantes habían profesores, “post docs”, y estudiantes de pregrado y posgrado de la Universidad de la Florida. El objetivo principal de la salida fue visitar las localidades fosilíferas del Canal de Panamá, tales como Hodges Hill, el tercer juego de esclusas de Gatún y las canteras de Sabanitas, donde un fósil de manatí de 12 millones de años fue encontrado por el grupo.

Otras actividades incluyeron reuniones con colaboradores del PCP PIRE y otras instituciones panameñas como SENACYT, la Universidad de Panamá, el Museo de Ciencias Naturales, el Museo del Canal Interoceánico y el Biomuseo.
