Calusa Blueway Paddling Festival
10/31/2009
Location: 13810 Waterfront Drive, Pineland, Florida

The Calusa Heritage Trail at the Randell Research Center in Pineland will host the second week-end of the Calusa Blueway Paddling Festival on October 31, 2009. Events will include on-going Speaker/Program Tent, Hands-on Arts & Skills of the Calusa, Guided Walking Tours of the archaeological site, Club Guided Kayak Tours, Community Organization Exhibitors, Picnic Areas, Food Vendors and more!

The "Mote Mobile" will be on site to offer marine life lovers of all ages fascinating information about many animals found along Florida’s shorelines. This "aquarium on wheels" features a 1,200-gallon exhibit that includes tropical and subtropical fish species such as queen angelfish, snook, hogfish, bar soldier fish and many other swimmers indigenous to Florida. The "Mote Mobile" includes a traveling touch tank that offers visitors the chance to hold live animals including starfish, sea urchins, horseshoe crabs, and marine snails. The "Mote Mobile" also offers facts about sea turtles that nest along Florida’s beaches and about some of the crabs and shells you can find. Friendly staff and volunteers will be available to answer your questions.

Visitors can also tour the Calusa Heritage Trail, a 3,700-foot interpretive walkway that leads visitors through the mounds, canals, and other features of the Pineland archaeological site. Museum-quality interpretive signs along the improved trail provide detailed information regarding the Calusa Indians who inhabited the Pineland site, their culture and environment, and the history of Southwest Florida after the Calusa left. The trail also features observation platforms atop the site's tallest shell mound, in addition to trail-side benches and a boardwalk and bridge over low-lying areas.

Vendors and exhibitors are asked to register by September 30, 2009 -- call Linda Heffner at (239) 283-2062 for details and fee information.
