Biological Sampling: Sea Turtle Data Collection

Sea turtles are not commonly caught in the large coastal shark bottom long-line fishery. However
because all species of sea turtles are considered either threatened or endangered, certain
techniques must be employed when one is caught. This includes de-hooking and releasing all live
sea turtles and tagging, taken a biopsy, and measuring all turtles small enough to be brought
onboard. All observers must go through a two-day training session detailing the proper techniques
for handling and releasing sea turtles.
